What Is Colon Hydrotherapy? A Complete Guide

What Is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy β€” also called a colonic, colonic irrigation, or colon cleansing β€” is a gentle procedure that introduces filtered, temperature-controlled water into the large intestine (colon) to help flush accumulated waste. The treatment is performed by a trained therapist using specialized equipment in a private setting.

Unlike an enema, which introduces a single infusion of water into the lower portion of the colon, colon hydrotherapy uses a continuous flow of water to cleanse the entire length of the large intestine. Sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes on the table, with total studio time around 60 to 75 minutes including intake and aftercare.

How Does a Colonic Work?

During a colon hydrotherapy session, you lie comfortably on a treatment table. A small, disposable speculum is gently inserted into the rectum, and warm filtered water flows into the colon through a closed system. As the water enters, it softens and loosens waste material, which exits through the same tubing in a closed circuit. There is no mess, no odor, and you remain covered throughout.

Your therapist monitors the water pressure, temperature, and flow rate to keep you comfortable. You can communicate freely during the session, and you can pause or stop at any time.

Open System vs. Closed System

There are two main types of colon hydrotherapy equipment: open systems and closed systems.

A closed system uses a tube connected to the equipment, and the therapist manages the water flow while you lie on a table. Waste exits through the tubing into the machine in a sealed circuit. This system gives the therapist more control over pressure and allows them to observe the process for your safety.

An open system (also called a gravity system or LIBBE) uses a small pencil-sized rectal tube, and you sit on a basin built into the table. Water flows in gently via gravity, and waste releases naturally. You are typically alone in the room for most of the session.

At SoCal Colonics, we use a closed system because it offers more precision, better comfort control, and allows Jenna to stay with you throughout the treatment.

What Does a Session Feel Like?

Most clients describe the sensation as mild pressure β€” similar to needing to use the restroom. Some people feel slight cramping when water reaches areas of the colon with more buildup, but this is temporary and passes quickly. Many clients find the experience surprisingly relaxing once they settle in.

The most common response after a session: “I feel lighter.” Clients frequently report reduced bloating, more energy, and a general sense of clarity in the hours and days following treatment.

Who Gets Colonics?

People seek colon hydrotherapy for a variety of reasons. Some are dealing with occasional bloating, constipation, or digestive discomfort. Others are interested in gut health as part of a broader wellness routine. Athletes use it for recovery. People preparing for medical procedures sometimes use it as preparation. And many clients simply appreciate how they feel afterward.

Colon hydrotherapy is not recommended for people with certain medical conditions, including active inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis flare-ups), recent colon surgery, severe hemorrhoids, pregnancy, or serious kidney or heart conditions. A qualified therapist will screen you for contraindications before every session.

Is Colon Hydrotherapy Safe?

When performed by a trained professional using modern equipment and proper hygiene protocols, colon hydrotherapy is generally considered safe for many healthy adults. Key safety factors include using single-use disposable tubing and speculums, maintaining strict equipment sanitation, monitoring water temperature and pressure, and conducting a thorough health screening before each session.

At SoCal Colonics, safety is not negotiable. Every session uses brand new disposables, the equipment is medical-grade and FDA-registered, and Jenna personally oversees every treatment from start to finish.

How to Prepare for Your First Session

Preparing for your first colonic is simple. In the days leading up to your appointment, drink plenty of water. Eat lightly for a few hours before your session β€” avoid heavy meals, alcohol, and carbonated drinks the day of. Wear comfortable clothing. And come with any questions you have β€” your therapist should welcome them.
